Fostering Future Professional Writing

     High quality professional writing skills are an important asset both to an individual and the company he/ she is working for. Your professional writing skills will tell your audience about your level of education, your experience, knowledge and competence. The words you use in your job application letters or how you format your resume will tell your employer about your education and competence. Individual with high quality professional writing skills succeed in achieving their objectives with less efforts than those with poor professional writing skills. With good writing professional skills you can easily convince potential employers about you competences and qualification for a job,

you can convince top company management and fellow employ about adopting a business strategy or you can easily manage to convince client to take up your products. Professional writing skills in an organization give that organization a competitive edge.  In current competitive business environment how a company presents its ideas and products largely determine their success. Professional writing also projects a positive image of a company to its public and shield the company from damages brought about by unprofessional writing. These damages may be such as law suits arising from a writing that mistakenly portrayed negative gender or racist messages. Professional writing also fosters effective communication within a company therefore improving efficiency of operations.

      This course has come along way in improving my professional writing skills. Through this course I have learnt how to make effective communication in a professional setting. I have learnt about effective use of language and various professional writing ethical considerations at the work place. These ethical considerations are such plagiarism, gender awareness, race and cultural awareness, religious and religious symbols awareness and avoiding generalization. The course has made me aware of how lack of these ethical considerations while doing professional writing my bring conflict within an organization or between an organization and its external audience.   I have also increased my knowledge on how to organize my writing, design my documents and format my writing in order to convey my intended message effectively. In addition,

I have also learnt how to use the basic business correspondence such as memos, faxes, emails, IMS and letters. These business correspondences are regularly used in a business environment and therefore this acquired skill will take me along way in my career.  Another important area that I have learnt about in professional writing is how to make effective presentations. It is not enough to research and write the best document but also how you make the presentation of your information is a very important element in a professional setting. Through this course I have learnt how to prepare documents, reports and visuals for effective presentation.

        After this course my approach to professional writing has completely change. I have now understood how important professional writing is and what the difference between good professional writing and poor professional writing could mean. Unlike before, when I could start writing from anywhere, I have now learnt that professional writing is a systematic process that follows clearly outlined steps. Before undertaking a professional writing assignment I now understand that I will have to plan my activities. Identifying the purpose for writing, how to conduct research, where to get information, making an outline for my writing, writing a first draft and editing and then deciding on the best medium for presentation are some of the steps I have learnt.

Before writing, it is very important to know your audience and you should keep them in mind through out your writing process. Your language, tone, style, design and mode of presentation should be tailored to best suit your audience. This was an important learning point for me. When writing professional assignment I will now put all the professional writing ethics into consideration. I will avoid language, tone or expressions that will convey sexist, racist or negative cultural or religious messages. This course has also changed my approach for writing basic business correspondence such as letter, emails and memos. I can now write effective letters, resumes and business memos among other documents. In addition, this course has changed my approach towards making presentations. I have learnt how important it is to avoid too many messages and use visual images, acronyms while making presentations. 

        This course has been effective in equipping students with necessary professional writing skills that prepares them for the professional fields. The areas covered in course on professional writing are very important in providing students with necessary knowledge in professional writing. Room for growth still exists especially on topics such as business correspondence and preparing presentations. I feel that these are important areas in day to day professional writing in a business environment. If these areas are covered in more details a lot more effective professional writers would be produced. The course should also provide some lesson in creative thinking. Most professional writing requires innovativeness and creativity and therefore introduction of such a topic will also be instrument in producing more efficient professional writers.
